Quick summary

Before you buy: 5 Things to consider when purchasing a non-greasy moisturizer

Before you dash to purchase a non-greasy moisturizer, there are five things you should take into consideration:

1. Skin type

Non-greasy moisturizers are not just for people with oily skin. Anyone who wants a matte finish or a lightweight moisturizer can use it. Among the non-greasy moisturizers, many are formulated for a specific skin type. You have to know what’s your skin type before you purchase.

2. Sun protection

You have to use sun protection. Many non-greasy moisturizers do not have sun protection. With a lightweight formula, you need to protect yourself from UV radiation. Do you wear sunscreen daily? Do you have a formula with at least SPF 30?

3. Skin conditions

Do you have associated skin problems? Uneven skin tone, fine lines, loss of elasticity, and dullness?

You have to use sun protection. Many non-greasy moisturizers do not have sun protection. With a lightweight formula, you need to protect yourself from UV radiation. Do you wear sunscreen daily? Do you have a formula with at least SPF 30?

4. Budget

How much are you willing to spend? Most of the products on our list are organic and contain natural ingredients. However, we understand, a moisturizer is something that you would likely use at least twice a day and more so during the winter. So decide how much you’ll need for a season and how much you’re willing to splurge.

5. Allergies

Non-greasy moisturizers often contain some unusual ingredients that can exacerbate rosacea and trigger allergies. For example, egg, St Joh’s wort, etc. can flare up some skin sensitivities. Know what yours are and then read the ingredients before making your purchase.

Unique features:

  • Organic, botanical formula
  • Cream is blended by hand
  • Hypoallergenic and airless pump bottle prevents contamination

The best non-greasy moisturizer for:

All skin types, particularly those with sensitive and acne-prone skin.

Notable ingredients:

Jojoba, calendula, clary sage

Overview:

If your skin is sensitive, then the chances are that you’ve experienced some difficulty finding a tolerable product. Using skincare products that are formulated with natural organic ingredients, and without harmful chemicals, such as parabens, ensures a reduced possibility of such irritations. The ZELEN Life Moisturizer is geared for all skin types, especially sensitive and acne-prone thanks to its pure, botanical formula.

Jojoba oil is a non-comedogenic and hypoallergenic ingredient. It is very similar to the skin’s sebum, making irritations, and allergic reactions from it rare. Due to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, it calms and heals the skin making it very effective against acne.[1]

Calendula oil and clary sage also reduce redness and inflammation while nourishing and hydrating the skin. This makes them very effective in treating wounds and skin conditions such as eczema.

The handmade blend of these ingredients creates a creamy lightweight texture that absorbs quickly and easily glides onto the skin. As jojoba cleverly mimics the properties of the skin’s natural oil, it is very well received by the skin. The cream doesn’t leave a sticky or greasy residue on application but leaves the skin soft and hydrated. I was a little concerned about the potential greasiness of organic oils, but honestly, I was really impressed with its non-greasy nature.

Also on application, you will surely notice the subtle scent of its natural ingredients. It has a wonderful mix of floral and citrusy scents that will surely leave you wanting more. I found the package and pump bottle to fit the premium feel that ZELEN Life is going for. Especially the matte-silver airless bottle, at it is really functional in terms of usability. The pump makes it easier to apply the correct dosage, and it is designed to keep the cream clean from environmental contamination such as bacteria, etc. This reduces the chance of irritations even more.

Even though this moisturizer has numerous benefits, it also has some drawbacks. If you are looking for a moisturizer that offers sun protection, then ZELEN Life Moisturizer is not for you. If you like an SPF in your daily moisturizer, then consider Mario Badescu’s Oil-Free Moisturizer, which contains strong, SPF 30 sun protection. Nevertheless, it is important to keep in mind that it includes fewer botanical ingredients than ZELEN Life.

The good:

  • No parabens, sulfates, or chemicals
  • Moisturizes the skin without causing irritations
  • Rich in vitamins, and antioxidants
  • Great action against acne breakouts

Things to think about:

  • Does contain organic oils, so it might not suitable for those looking for an oil-free option
  • Doesn’t contain sunscreen

Bottom line:

This is an ultra-lightweight moisturizer that is excellent for all skin types. Especially those prone to acne comedones and breakouts.

Unique features:

  • Provides lasting moisture and hydration throughout the day
  • Smoothens skin and improve skin’s barrier function

The best non-greasy moisturizer for:

Those with dry skin that needs constant hydration.

Notable ingredients:

Avocado oil, Rosa canina oil, Safflower oil, Jojoba

Overview:

Similar to ZELEN Life’s Moisturizer, Jurlique’s Balancing Day Care Cream is a lightweight moisturizer that is formulated from natural ingredients. It provides deep hydration due to the inclusion of ingredients such as avocado oil, rosa canina oil, safflower seed oil, jojoba seed oil, shea butter, and macadamia seed oil.

Avocado oil not only hydrates the skin but also calms irritations, such as itchiness and redness. Studies have shown that it also increases the soluble collagen content in the skin.[2]

Rosa canina oil (also known as rosehip) improves the overall health of the epidermis while creating a protective film that assists in cell regeneration. This means it is greatly effective in reducing the appearance of wrinkles and scars. It also helps the skin retain hydration for a longer time. As for safflower seed oil, is an ingredient that provides all-around hydration and antioxidant benefits for the skin.

What is the experience using it?

Firstly, a pea-sized amount is all you need to get all of its benefits. The cream does not leave a greasy residue and is absorbed quickly by the skin. It provides a nice balanced texted of not too heavy and not too light that leaves dry skin feeling soft and hydrated for long durations. Additionally, you will appreciate its wonderful floral scent that is not overpowering.

As for the packaging, I must say that it is nothing special. Due to its design, squeezing the appropriate amount of cream out of the plastic tube is challenging. I found myself having more cream in my hands than needed, which is not ideal for a moisturizer with a high price tag.

If you are looking for a more economical option, then I would say the ZELEN Life Moisturizer and its airless pump bottle is easier to dispense the cream. However, if you are looking for an oil-free moisturizer that is more suitable for oily skin types, then Jack Black Clean Break Oil-Free (for men) and Mario Badescu Oil-Free SPF 30 are great options. Both provide good hydration at an affordable price. The addition of SPF 30 in Mario Badescu makes it ideal for morning use.

The good:

  • Doesn’t leave a residue as it absorbs quickly
  • Rich in antiaging botanical ingredients
  • Great moisturization for dry skin types

Things to think about:

  • Has a fragrance which might be irritating for some
  • Very expensive for the amount you are getting

Bottom line:

This is a great non-greasy moisturizer for those looking to reduce lines, improve skin elasticity and hydration.

Unique features:

  • Moisturizing and hydrating
  • For soft and supple skin
  • Non-greasy texture

The best non-greasy moisturizer for:

Those with very dry skin.

Notable ingredients:

Shea butter, glycerin

Overview:

L’Occitane’s Comforting Cream is a moisturizer that is formulated to provide the deepest hydration. It is suitable for very dry skin types that are often flaky and rough. Its formula consists of 5% shea butter and glycerin, which are known ingredients for their hydration capabilities.

Traditionally, shea butter was used for its anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects in Africa. It inhibits the inflammatory substances in the skin, which can provide calming and soothing benefits.[3] Research has also shown that topical applications of shea butter are very suitable for those with sensitive skin types.[4] It locks moisture in the skin, leaving it soft and supple during the day without further irritations.

Glycerin is another important ingredient in skincare as it acts as a humectant. It retains moisture while providing intense hydration. This results in relieving effects of dryness – such as roughness, redness, flakiness, etc.

Texture and application:

While its texture is somewhat non-greasy, this is not the most lightweight cream you can find. Its consistency falls into the thicker side, however, that’s not necessarily bad. This is because thicker creams can retain hydration for longer, making them very suitable for very dry skin types. The cream itself absorbs quickly and spreads easily upon application.

Even though it is very effective for face hydration, one thing that I didn’t like about it was the smell. You can definitely distinguish that it is derived from artificial fragrance. Thus, it can be irritating to people who have sensitive olfaction. If you are looking for a moisturizer that doesn’t contain any artificial fragrance, then ZELEN Life Moisturizer might be more suitable for you. Its scent comes purely from its botanical ingredients.

In addition, while this cream offers superior hydration, it lacks anti-aging properties. If you are looking for a hydrating anti-aging option, then Too Cool for School might be more suitable for you. It contains collagen fibers and eggs, which are well regarded for helping to reduce wrinkles and fine lines.

The good:

  • Leaves skin smooth and silky
  • Relieves from itchiness and reduces redness
  • Intense hydration

Things to think about:

  • Can flare up rosacea

Bottom line:

This is a very good moisturizer for those with very dry or rough skin.

Unique features:

  • Promotes skin tightening and improves elasticity
  • Can be used as a sleeping/overnight mask

The best non-greasy moisturizer for:

Those looking to firm up the skin.

Notable ingredients:

Collagen fibers, eggs, inca omega

Overview:

Egg Mellow Cream is an all-in-one anti-aging solution. It can be used as a moisturizer, serum, mask, eye, or neck cream. Its formula is highly enriched with egg extracts and inca omega oil to provide intensive nourishment to the skin. It is also infused with collagen fibers to support the appearance of more elastic skin.

Eggs have been studied extensively when it comes to anti-aging. Studies suggest that the use of a water-soluble egg facial cream for eight weeks substantially lessens wrinkles. This is achieved due to its rich antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. Studies have shown that eggs assist in decreasing the formation of free radicals by inflammatory cells.[5] They are rich in vitamins A and E, which are well-known for their anti-aging capabilities.

Ceramide fibers form a waterproof barrier that protects the underlying skin tissues and locks in the moisture.[6] Because of that, they nourish the skin while increasing its elasticity and softness. Inca Omega oil offers great hydration to the skin while revitalizing it, increasing its overall protection (from environmental stressors) and elasticity.

Despite the impressive ingredients, does this product live up to expectations?

The cream provides a texture balanced in thickness and doesn’t leave a greasy residue on application. In fact, a little goes a long way with only a pea-sized amount is needed to get optimal results. Even though it is not greasy, you may find your skin feels a little bit tacky. This is due to the inclusion of collagen fibers.

Clearly, however, this moisturizer is not for everyone. Eggs are a common allergen and while its fragrance is nice, it is artificial. So stay away from this cream if you have any concerns about skin irritations.

While this moisturizer offers great qualities, it is neither cruelty-free nor vegan-friendly, which may be important aspects for you. If you are looking for a cruelty-free and vegan moisturizer, we have plenty of alternative options on our list.

The good:

  • Under-eye area treatment
  • Improves skin elasticity
  • Great anti-aging action

Things to think about:

  • Contains egg and may not be suitable for those with allergies to an egg
  • Not cruelty-free nor vegan

Bottom line:

This is a great “all-in-one” option for those who wish to moisturize and firm up the skin in multiple areas.

Unique features:

  • Oil-free moisturizer
  • Evens out skin tone
  • Chemical-free

The best non-greasy moisturizer for:

Men looking to even out skin tone.

Notable ingredients:

Basil, white tea, sea kelp, sodium hyaluronate

Overview:

On average, men have 20% to 25% thicker skin than women. As such, it is tougher in texture. That is why many brands specifically formulate skincare products for men and… Jack Black’s Clean Break Facial Moisturizer is evidence of that.

It is an oil-free natural moisturizer that contains numerous ingredients such as white tea, sea kelp, basil, and sodium hyaluronate (a.k.a. hyaluronic acid). The fact that it is oil-free makes it really suitable for men with oily skin types.

Looking deeper into its ingredients:

White tea is well-known for its antiaging properties as it helps to strengthen both collagen and elastin, making the skin appear smoother and younger. This is due to the high levels of antioxidants and phenols it contains.

Sea kelps contain bioactive compounds that help to preserve a healthy epidermis. Their protection properties provide antibacterial, antiaging, and anti-acne action while boosting hydration.[7][8] Basil also assists in bringing back the youthful appearance of the skin due to its rejuvenating qualities and its ability to combat free radicals. It also assists in reducing redness and roughness.

Hyaluronic acid is a key molecule involved in skin moisture, which retains water. The inclusion of sodium hyaluronate provides freshness, locks in moisture, and increases the elasticity of the skin.[9]

So, how do all these ingredients come together?

This formula blends together to create a lightweight cream that is neither sticky nor greasy. It applies easily to the skin and can be used both day and night. The bottle’s pump also deserves a mention, as it is very easy to apply the correct amount and protects the cream from contamination. Surely, a premium design.

However, if you have a very dry skin type, then you might find its hydration not enough. While it provides good moisturization, it is not on par with, L’Occitane’s Comforting Cream.

Lastly, it is free of synthetic fragrance, colorants, and parabens, making it great for sensitive skin as well.

The good:

  • No shine moisturizer
  • Great for night-time application
  • Has anti-aging and anti-acne effects, so is great for those with acne

Things to think about:

  • Hydration doesn’t last all day and may require repeated applications during the day

Bottom line:

This is a good moisturizer for those looking to even out skin tone.

  • Healing properties

The best non-greasy moisturizer for:

Those looking for sun protection.

Notable ingredients:

Glycerin, green tea, aloe vera, St. John’s wort

Overview:

Mario Badescu’s Oil-Free Moisturizer SPF 30 protects you from harmful UV rays that can prematurely age or damage your skin.

Its formula is lightweight and contains green tea, aloe vera, and St John’s wort. Green tea is rich in antioxidants that help the skin fight against free radicals. It contains a group of compounds called polyphenols which affect sebum production and acne.

How?

It is antibacterial, anti-lipogenic, anti-inflammatory. It also delivers rich hydration, nourishing and calming the skin.[10] Aloe vera increases the amount of collagen in wounds. It changes the composition of collagen as it increases collagen cross-linking. This promotes wound healing.

Due to its healing properties, it can treat various skin conditions, including burns, wounds, and psoriasis. Additionally, clinical trials show that aloe vera retains the skin’s moisture assisting in long-lasting hydration. Whatsmore, St John’s wort also assists in treating wounds, burns, sunburns, and blemishes.[11]

This is a very lightweight formula that is easily absorbed by the skin. It doesn’t leave a greasy residue, however, I found that it leaves the face a little bit shiny after application. If you don’t like the shiny finish that it provides, ZELEN Life Moisturizer offers a matte effect after application. However, it doesn’t contain any SPF.

Mario Badescu’s Oil Free Moisturizer SPF 30 doesn’t come in a luxurious bottle or packaging, but it offers great versatility as it is both a sunscreen and a moisturizer. The SPF 30 does a great job of protecting your skin throughout the day, particularly useful for those who spend a lot of time outdoors.

The good:

  • Protects from sun damage
  • Rich in antioxidants
  • Active against acne-causing bacteria

Things to think about:

  • The face can appear slightly shiny

Bottom line:

This is a fantastic option for those who are looking for full sun protection and sunscreen.

The best non-greasy moisturizer for:

Those looking for a primer formula as a base before foundation.

Notable ingredients:

Safflower, sunflower, jojoba, retinol

Overview:

CINEMA SECRETS Pro Cosmetics Ultimate Foundation Primer is specifically designed to be worn under makeup. Its formula is silicone-based and has key ingredients, such as safflower, sunflower, jojoba, and retinol.

Safflower is a great all-rounder when considering its benefits to the skin. It is hydrating and anti-inflammatory, while its active compound, acacetin, inhibits UVB-induced skin photoaging [12]. Acacetin is a type of flavonoid that also acts as a potent anti-wrinkle agent.

Furthermore, sunflower is rich in vitamin E and antioxidants, which also helps to reduce signs of aging, such as wrinkles. It also forms a protecting barrier that protects from environmental stressors.

Jojoba soothes the skin due to the unrivaled hydration it provides. Plus, retinol (vitamin A) stimulates collagen production, giving a ”plumping” effect that reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

Applying a dime-size amount is enough to moisturize and soothe the skin. The cream is very lightweight, non-greasy, and spreads nicely onto the skin. While it is formulated to be worn under makeup, it can also double up as a moisturizer in its own right.

As for the packaging, its premium look reflects its premium price tag. While this was not an issue when I used it, some reviewers have questioned the quality and reliability of the pump bottle. While it provides great hydration, do keep in mind that the formula contains silicone, which may not be to your liking.

If you are looking for a product that would work well under makeup but doesn’t contain silicones, then Cool for School’s All-in-One Egg Mellow Cream is a good alternative. It is very versatile and offers similar anti-aging capabilities due to its inclusion of collagen fibers and eggs.

The good:

  • Can be used as a primer
  • Makes the skin smooth and silky
  • Contains vitamins A and E

Things to think about:

  • Contains silicone

Bottom line:

This is an excellent non-greasy moisturizer that can also double up as a makeup primer.

How we chose these products

As we searched for the best non-greasy moisturizer, there were several things we considered. The first was skin type.

Moisturizers generally add moisture and while doing so, inadvertently add shine. This makes the skin look greasy. Not a lot of people are fans of this look.

So we tried to look for lightweight and ultra-light formulas that would not make you look like you’d bathed in oil.

Whether you have sensitive or combination skin, we covered every skin type. Additionally, some of the products on our list have SPF for those who don’t want to use another product just for UV protection.

Ingredients were another part of our search. We tried to look for as many products that used organic ingredients. The world is now moving towards sustainable skincare and cruelty-free products. So we focused our search on brands and products that shared those values.

We also considered other problems like uneven skin tones, dark spots, fines lines, and wrinkles to help you choose a moisturizer that is non-greasy and treats the above issues.

Some of the products can be used as a serum or face mask. We also chose the products that doubled up for those who are looking for that something extra. A non-greasy moisturizer that serves as a primer for your makeup; we covered that.

An undereye area, we got that for you too. Our list is diverse to suit everyone. Whether your skin’s losing elasticity or it looks dull, there’s something for everyone on this list.

Lastly, we also made sure that the price range is reasonable so that you can afford to use this season-long, especially during those long winter months.

Frequently asked questions

What is a non-greasy moisturizer?

A non-greasy moisturizer does not mean a non-oil moisturizer. It means a moisturizer that doesn’t make you look oily. Oil-based moisturizers add moisture and control the sebum production as they lock in the skin’s moistures. Most of these formulas are created as lightweight creams and are absorbed quickly into the skin.

Why do I need a moisturizer when I have oily skin?

Irrespective of skin type, we all need to lock in the moisture and keep the skin hydrated. The very fact that you’re producing extra sebum is the body’s response to dehydration in an attempt to rehydrate the skin.

UV radiation, cleansing, office air conditioning tends to remove moisture from our skin, and so even though you have oily skin, you must use a non-greasy moisturizer.

How often should I wash my skin if it’s oily?

Don’t give in to the temptation to repeatedly wash your face. If anything, you’ll only trigger more sebum production. Wash twice a day with an oil-free cleanser.

What kind of skincare products to use along with my non-greasy moisturizer?

Try to find oil-free makeup. Also, use products that are non-comedogenic and without alcohol.

How should I apply my moisturizer?

Generally, after cleansing the skin, the moisturizer is usually applied to damp skin. However, in the case of non-greasy moisturizers, this is slightly different. Since these formulas are created differently, many are applied to dry skin.

Some need to be massaged; others need to be just dotted across the skin. The application varies.

Can I exfoliate while I use a non-greasy moisturizer?

Exfoliation is important to remove the top dead layer of skin. If you have sensitive skin, acne, cysts, then don’t use a scrub. That will worsen your skin condition. Instead, choose an acid like Glycolic Acid.

How much you use depends entirely on what you’re’ using and how frequently you do it.

How can I prevent my skin from getting oily?

Establish a good skincare routine. You can prevent excess sebum production by never sleeping with your makeup on. Use a paper towel to blot out excess oil. Stay hydrated.

This means not just with a moisturizer but by increasing water intake. If you’re out all day or spend most of the time in air conditioning, you need to drink up. Use a mild cleanser and an oil-free/non-comedogenic moisturizer.

What should I do if I break out with a non-greasy moisturizer?

Stop the moisturizer immediately. Review any other products that are comedogenic. Discontinue all skin products. If you’re using an exfoliant or chemical peel, stop them as well. Don’t wear any makeup as this will further clog up the pores.

Observe the breakout. Is it cystic acne, redness, or just a whitehead? Continue using a mild cleanser and shift to a non-oil based moisturizer. Then evaluate. If you still have redness and cysts after a week, seek medical help from a dermatologist.

Conclusion

We shared some of the best non-greasy moisturizers on our list.
