All to help you achieve glowing skin.

Quick summary

Before you buy: 5 Things to consider when purchasing illuminating moisturizers

We all crave glowing skin. There’s no shortage of products promising to deliver an instant bright radiance.

A quick search will yield thousands of products. However, there are a few things to consider before you purchase an illuminating moisturizer.

1. Illumination: Yay or nay

For those with oily skin, an illumination moisturizer might not be at the top of their list. Yet, most moisturizers designed for oily and combination skin can soak up all the natural oil, leaving your skin looking dull.

An illumination moisturizer can absorb all the oil leaving you with a dewy complexion that is radiant and not greasy. If you’re someone who also uses a bronzer, tint, satin foundation, or highlighter to achieve that glow, you may want to consider using an illumination moisturizer.

2. Ingredients

Lots of products will promise you illumination. The difference is in the ingredients. Several brightening ingredients like hydroquinone, mercury, dioxane, and BHT(Butylated Hydroxytoluene) are toxic but continue to be used in the pursuit of even, brighter and lighter skin tones.

Studies have shown that renal adenomas and leukemia occurred in animal experiments treated with hydroquinone.[1] This proves the nephrotoxicity and carcinogenic properties. As a result, this compound is banned.

Creams that contain mercury can cause mercury poisoning and can be fatal.[2] There are alternatives to these harmful chemicals, and they are found in nature, through fruits, seeds, and oils. Our list covers products that contain many of these naturally occurring compounds to brighten your skin.

3. Skin type

Illumination moisturizers have various formulas. Each formulation is created to provide a glow or sheen. Some will absorb oil, while others may add to your skin.

You have to know your skin type before you make your choice. If you have oily skin, you may choose to forego a moisturizer that contains many oils, or you may use a lightweight formula. Knowing your skin type can help you make the right choice when it comes to illumination moisturizers.

4. Texture

What is the texture you want? Or what do you hope to attain with an illuminating moisturizer? Many provide different textures while giving you that radiant glow.

Dewy glow, velvet finish, matte look, or a slight sheen. these are different textures based on the percentages of oils and residues in the moisturizer. If you know your skin type and the texture you want, this will help you narrow down your search for the best illuminating moisturizer.

5. Sun protection

If you already have a skincare routine, the last thing you want to do is add another layer of sunscreen above your moisturizer. Most of them feel greasy and tend to add an unnatural shine to the skin, which is not illuminating but rather artificial.

Most folks want a simple all-in-one illuminating moisturizer that also has SPF. UV radiation from the sun causes cutaneous melanomas.[3] SPF or sun protection factors, when properly applied, in layman’s terms, mean SPF 15 lets in one in 15 harmful UV rays. That correlates to about 93% protection.

SPF 30 lets in one in 30 UV rays. That’s about 97% protection. Finally, SPF 50 lets in one in 50 UV rays. That translates to about 98% protection.

Sun protection factor is defined as the ratio of the least ultraviolet energy necessary to produce a minimal redness on skin protected by sunscreen to the amount of energy required to produce the same erythema on unprotected skin. So basically, it’s the minimal erythema dose.[4]

An illuminating moisturizer may or may not have SPF. However, most people with sun-damaged skin tend to require SPF to protect from further damage and also to heal existing damage. So we’ve added illuminating moisturizers that have some SPF protection.

Unique features:

  • Pure organic ingredients (chemical-free)
  • Handmade cream
  • Airless pump bottle with matte-silver features

The best illuminating moisturizer for:

Those who value clean skincare. It is suitable for all skin types, particularly sensitive and acne-prone skin.

Notable ingredients:

Jojoba, calendula, clary sage

Overview:

If you are looking for a healthy complexion that naturally glows, then it all boils down to what comes into contact with your skin. What you do and do not use. If you use natural botanicals rich in vitamins and antioxidants then the likelihood is you will see a positive reaction. Conversely, if you use harmful chemicals then the chances are your skin is going to respond negatively.

The theory is not rocket science. But in practical terms, it can be confusing. With an abundance of options on the market, you could quite easily select a moisturizer that has both favorable ingredients that brighten your skin and unfavorable ingredients that make it look dull.

How do you find the right balance?

The ZELEN Life Moisturizer is an option that takes complications out of the equation. It does this by having a pure plant formula that boosts the skin and is free of the nasty chemicals that can stifle it.

Let’s take a deeper look:

Jojoba is a vitamin-packed botanical that brings a range of benefits to the skin. It is regarded as a highly effective acne combater. It does this by regulating the production of sebum (the skin’s natural oil). One of the primary causes of breakouts is when the sebaceous glands overproduce sebum. This overproduction leads to blocked pores, bacterial overgrowth, and acne lesions. Jojoba intelligently mimics the same composition of sebum, which sends a message to the sebaceous glands not to create more. Jojoba also has excellent anti-aging and skin healing properties. It is full of antioxidants that improve elasticity and protect the skin from damage. This slows down the development of wrinkles and fine lines. It also possesses natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory compounds that keep the skin calm.

Calendula also helps to fight bacterial and reduce inflammation. It is extremely nourishing to the skin which boosts moisture and controls redness. It is a natural antiseptic. Clary sage has its own antioxidant properties that encourage wound healing and prevent skin infections. It reduces signs of aging and promotes a soothed appearance.

This moisturizer has a very light texture that absorbs nicely into the skin. Its non-greasy composition leaves no residue. Despite being lightweight, I like the level of hydration it provides. Your skin also feels well protected from the outside world. It is a challenge for all of us to maintain a luminous complexion during the wintertime. But this product has enough moisturizing power to prevent colder climates from drying out the skin. I believe this is down to its humectant and occlusive properties. It creates an unpenetrable barrier that seals in moisture for longer-lasting hydration.

When we think of glowing skin, we imagine a clear, uneven complexion free of blemishes, discolorations, and signs of aging. We always have to be realistic with our expectations, as nobody has perfect “glass” skin. However, I found that this moisturizer can bring anti-acne and anti-aging benefits, which I believe largely comes down to the organic, bio-active ingredients.

Now you know what this moisturizer is made of. It is equally important to know what it’s not made of. It doesn’t contain parabens, sulfates, silicones, petrochemicals, synthetic colors, or fragrances that always bring a risk of irritating the skin. This is particularly relevant for those with sensitive skin types.

Having tested this product, and taking into account the ingredients, I believe this moisturizer is suitable for all skin types. The additional features such as its scent and packaging are also unisex in nature. It comes in a high-end-looking, matte-silver airless pump. The bottle is only 1.7 fl oz / 50 ml but this is a common size for a moisturizer. However, if you desire a higher volume, Juice Beauty’s Moisturizer offers 4 fl oz / 120 ml.

I like the light, yet distinctive citrus-inspired scent that comes with this moisturizer. It is very uplifting when you use it, and adds an extra dimension to the moisturizing experience.

However, if you prefer an even more noticeable, “perfumery” floral scent, then you may prefer L’Occitane’s Peony Perfecting Face Cream on our list. On the other hand, if you like citrus and want a stronger version, then consider Murad’s Essential-C Day Moisture. Even though this moisturizer has a light texture suitable for summer, you should keep in mind that it does not contain sunscreen. Although, it can act as a very nice primer for following up with an SPF and makeup (if required). However, if you are looking for an illuminating moisturizer with SPF included, you have plenty of options on our list. Such as Perricone MD, Murad, and HydroPeptide.

As you would expect from a moisturizer inspired by nature, it is also cruelty-free and vegan-friendly.

The good:

  • Moisturizes and hydrates the skin without clogging pores
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Reduces acne breakouts and signs of aging
  • Rich in vitamins and antioxidants, as well as essential fatty acids
  • Not tested on animals

Things to think about:

  • No SPF

Bottom line:

The ZELEN Life Moisturizer illuminates all skin types with a balanced approach while providing moisture. It is rich in botanicals and free of chemicals, which maximizes skin health. Acne and aging are kept at bay to promote a clear and even skin tone.

The best illuminating moisturizer for:

Those with dry skin.

Notable ingredients:

Acai, noni, purple orchid

Overview:

The saying goes, “don’t judge a book by its cover.” But if ever there was a case for doing so, it’s right here. In skincare terms, of course.

Just one look at the ELEMIS Pro-Radiance Illuminating Flash Balm, and you’ll be forgiven for thinking this could be your next illuminating moisturizer. ELEMIS claims it can brighten your complexion in an instant. Let’s dissect this one and see if it’s true.

My first thoughts are that it has a very unusual (and mysterious) ingredients list:

I think Acai berry is a bit of a hidden skincare gem. It is not a common ingredient used in products, but it so versatile and brings a multitude of benefits. Firstly, it is loaded with vitamins A and C, which provide excellent anti-aging benefits. Acai increases hydration and collagen production in the skin, so it stays supple and youthful. It is illuminating by lightening and brightening skin tone. It is an anti-inflammatory and powerful antioxidant that prevents the breakdown of skin cells that cause fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots.

Noni is another natural anti-inflammatory that assists the skin’s repair process and curbs redness. Also rich in antioxidants, it minimizes the effect of free radicals. It is known as an adaptogen that can help the skin (and body) relax from daily stresses, resulting in a more rested and vibrant appearance.

Purple orchid is a moisturizing powerhouse. It nourishes and plumps the skin while protecting the skin from deterioration and subsequent loss of collagen and elastin. It soothes the surface and smoothes out the signs of aging. Purple orchid contains calcium, magnesium, and zinc which all promote skin health.

Texture:

This is a very moisturizing, balm-like cream. The texture is quite lightweight but goes on nice and thick when applied. It is ideal for dry skin types and I found that it serves well as a primer (for those who wear makeup). It is not overly greasy and absorbs easily. However, if you have oily skin and are looking for a more lightweight and less greasy moisturizer, we have other options on our list. Such as the ZELEN Life Moisturizer and Murad’s Essential-C Moisture.

The ZELEN Life Moisturizer absorbs faster and I also prefer its light citrus scent. A little to my surprise this moisturizer has a very strong ‘fragrancy’ scent. It’s not really to my liking. Despite this product’s many plus points, I have to say that, for me, the smell is a negative. It would also make me cautious if I had sensitive skin. So if that sounds like you, again, I would pick ZELEN Life’s or Murad’s over this moisturizer. Murad’s is a better option if you are looking for a comparable moisturizer that contains SPF.

If your skin is not too oily or sensitive, there is no denying this product’s illuminating abilities. Very rarely do you find a moisturizer with such a unique and creative formula. I love the inclusion of acai berry as I know (from past experience) that it helps the skin glow. If you can tolerate the scent and are prepared to pay the higher price tag, then this one is well worth a try.

If you are on a budget and are looking for a greater quantity, then take a look at Juice Beauty’s Moisturizer as it’s over double the size and almost half the price.

The good:

  • Contains superfoods for the skin
  • Brightens skin
  • Lightweight texture makes skin feels supple and fresh
  • Awarded Best Premium Radiance Cream – Notebook, 2013

Things to think about:

  • Has a peppery scent, some may like it, some won’t

Bottom line:

ELEMIS Pro-Radiance Illuminating Flash Balm is great for those looking for a radiance boost, especially if you have dry skin.

Unique features:

  • Delightful peony scent
  • Nice looking jar
  • Offers a slight tint

The best illuminating moisturizer for:

All skin types.

Notable ingredients:

Peony extract, glycerin, chestnut tree extract.

Overview:

Skin tone is basically its surface color. Sounds simple, doesn’t it. But making this skin tone luminous is anything but.

Enter – L’Occitane’s Hydrating Peony Perfecting Face Cream.

Let’s take a closer look:

Peony extract is an antioxidant that helps to make the skin look brighter. As we age, our complexion becomes visibly lackluster and dull. Peony can inject life back into our skin by boosting radiance and restoring clarity. It can reduce the appearance of age spots and hyperpigmentation. As an antioxidant, it can help protect the skin from free radical damage caused by the sun’s UV rays. Studies have demonstrated the benefits of peony (Paenonia Lactflora) in hyperpigmentation skin disorders.[8]

Glycerin is an effective humectant, which assists the skin with maintaining moisture. It is a “water magnet” that draws moisture to the top layer of our skin, either from the deeper layers or from the external environment.

Chestnut tree extract consists of saponins, which are a potent anti-inflammatory that soothes inflammation and damage in the skin. Another component of chestnut tree extract is aescin, which contains antioxidants that boost collagen levels and improves skin elasticity. Whatsmore it contains natural exfoliating properties that help eliminate skin cells and clear the pores of daily debris.

That’s the ingredients. But let’s talk about the scent:

Where ELEMIS falls down, L’Occitane rises up. Not only does peony extract illuminate the skin, but its smell is absolutely divine. But keep in mind, it’s not a discreet scent. It’s not overpowering but you will certainly be aware of its presence.

The lightweight and non-greasy texture are comparable with ZELEN Life’s. Both absorb well without any stickiness, however, this product is not as moisturizing. ZELEN Life’s also offers a lighter scent if that’s more to your preference. Actually, I would like this L’Occitane Hydrating Cream to be a little bit more hydrating. If you have a dry skin type that loses moisture quickly, I think ELEMIS’ Pro-Radiance remains a better option.

L’Occitane claim this product offers “24-hour hydration” but I beg to differ. When applied in the morning, I think it would adequately get you through the day but I would not advise that you skipped your nightly routine. Also, if you live in extreme (hot or cold) climates you may need to top up with this moisturizer at least once during the day.

But if you have a normal skin type and live in a normal environment, then this sweet-smelling, ultra-refreshing moisturizer will certainly add some glow to your skin. It may even add a small tint, as some users report.

If you are looking for a fully-fledged skin tinting product (which includes SPF), then HydroPeptide’s Solar Defense might be the one for you.

The good:

  • Corrects complexion and imperfections
  • Improves skin texture and produces a healthy glow
  • Minimizes pores and reduces fine lines
  • Smells lovely

Things to think about:

  • No SPF

Bottom line:

L’Occitane’s Peony Perfecting Face Cream is a top-notch illuminating moisturizer with a unique, refreshing scent.

Unique features:

  • Loaded with vitamin C
  • Offers sun protection
  • Anti-aging

The best illuminating moisturizer for:

Those looking for sun protection and skin tightening in one. It is suitable for all skin types.

Notable ingredients:

Vitamin c ester, alpha-lipoic acid

Overview:

A luminous complexion is a bright complexion. They go hand-in-hand.

Here’s an offering by Perricone MD. Not only does it focus on making the skin glow, but it also offers sun protection at the same time.

Let’s consider the ingredients:

Vitamin C ester is a derivative of vitamin C. Thus, it contains a lot of the same compounds. It helps to heal the skin which can improve the appearance of hyperpigmentation. It also stimulates collagen to promote a firmer, wrinkle-reduced look. Vitamin C is also an excellent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant that helps damaged skin, furthering its anti-aging potencies.

Alpha-lipoic acid is also an anti-aging fighter. Prevention is better than cure. Alpha-lipoic acid helps prevent the breakdown of collagen. This ensures that the skin remains firmer and its pores remain tighter. Less sagginess means less development of fine lines and wrinkles. A study revealed that after 12 weeks of treatment with a cream containing 5% alpha-lipoic acid, there was a marked improvement in skin photoaging.[9]

This product offers a very nice moisturizing experience. The texture is light and takes to the skin effortlessly. Although, it can feel a little greasy after application. Not overly so, but you may notice just a little residue. The benefit is that it is very moisturizing and nourishing. This makes it a great option for mature skin types who can get a bit of daily dryness. Moreover, the abundance of vitamin C in this product makes it a straight-up anti-aging powerhouse.

But it is not the only vitamin C-rich moisturizer on our list. Murad’s Essential-C Day Moisture is an alternative option. They have similarities but also key differences. Firstly, they both offer sun protection (SPF 30) and they are equally hydrating. They are also very closely matched in price. If you are dead set on a vitamin C moisturizer, how do you know which one is best for you?

Well, it mainly comes down to your skin type. As I mentioned, Perricone MD’s is more geared towards dry, aging skin. Whereas, Murad’s is more effective for those with oily skin. Another obvious difference is their packaging. Perricone MD’s comes in a jar and Murad’s comes in a plastic tube. I do not particularly like to see moisturizing creams in jars, as there is a risk of contamination. However, I think Pericone MD’s packaging looks higher quality. The weight of the jar is quite heavy but compared to a plastic tube, it greater justifies the premium price tag. It comes in a slightly bigger size at 2 fl oz / 59 ml compared to Murad’s 1.7 fl oz / 50 ml offering.

If you are looking for really premium packaging, L’Occitane’s Peony Perfecting Face Cream really is a much nicer-looking jar. Alternatively, ZELEN Life’s Moisturizer offers a premium airless pump if you, like me, worry about contamination and prefer a more hygiene-friendly moisturizer.

The good:

  • Oil-free and provides a matte finish
  • Minimizes wrinkles and smoothens the skin
  • Reduces discoloration
  • SPF 30

Things to think about:

  • Not suitable for dry skin
  • Premium price

Bottom line:

Perricone MD’s Photo Brightening Moisturizer is a very good anti-aging illuminating moisturizer with sun protection.

The best illuminating moisturizer for:

Those with large pores and looking for a brighter complexion. It is particularly suitable for mature skin.

Notable ingredients:

Aloe vera juice, malic acid, green tea leaf extract

Overview:

Here’s another brightening cream, this time by the team at Juice Beauty.

True to form, they’ve gone for the fruity angle. But do not underestimate this seemingly jovial formula. This moisturizer is no pushover.

Here’s why:

The skin benefits of aloe vera are vast. Firstly, it is a wonderful skin healer thanks to its anti-inflammatory and cooling effect on the skin. People have turned to aloe vera for years upon years to treat various skin concerns, such as acne, minor burns, cuts, and wounds, sunburn, etc. It is also a moisturizing delight. It is made up of 98% water, which helps to hydrate the skin when applied. It also boosts collagen production and has an antioxidant presence that slows down the aging process.

Malic acid is derived from apple juice. It is a natural exfoliant that removes dead cells by decreasing their stickiness on the skin’s surface. As we age, the skin becomes more sluggish and does not renew at the same speed as in our youth. A build-up of dead skin cells can create a dull, uneven appearance. Malic acid speeds up cellular turnover and clears clogged pores to restore a more luminous complexion. It is also a good skin hydrator. As a humectant, it attracts moisture and keeps it locked in.

The majority of us are familiar with the antioxidant powers of green tea. In skincare, this ‘miracle worker’ helps to even out discoloration, calm red and inflamed areas, and lighten dark circles. A great remedy for those looking for glowing skin. Green tea also targets blemishes and wrinkles and diminishes their appearance.

I like the quirky inclusion of green apple in this product. It is very simple and reinforces the whole Juice Beauty brand. But this moisturizer is more than just a gimmick. The malic acid content is highly, highly effective in making the skin more visibly luminous. This is largely down to malic acid being an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA). As mentioned above, it offers exfoliating benefits that encourage skin cell turnover. What’s great about malic acid is that it has a more gentle action than other AHAs due to its humectant capabilities. It maintains moisture and keeps the skin stable by balancing its pH levels.

Therefore, it is possible that sensitive skin types could tolerate this moisturizer. However, I would always recommend exercising caution if you have very sensitive skin. If that is you, you’d be better of with either Perricone MD, Murad, or ZELEN Life’s moisturizer.

For everyone else with either normal, dry, oily, or combination skin, this is a very good option. It improves discolored areas and dark spots while offering anti-aging and pore-tightening benefits.

It also benefits your bank balance. It is reasonably priced when you take into account you will be getting 4 fl oz / 120 ml of cream. This is a lot greater than the average 1.7 fl oz / 50 ml sized moisturizer that you see on the market.

The good:

  • Antioxidant-rich and brightening effect
  • Soothes skin and reduces the appearance of redness
  • Reduces pores and lessens discolorations

Things to think about:

  • May cause a burning sensation for some

Bottom line:

Juice Beauty’s Green Apple Brightening Essence illuminates the skin while minimizing large pores. It offers good value for money but be careful if you have very sensitive skin.

The best illuminating moisturizer for:

All skin types.

Notable ingredients:

Meadowsweet extract, white mulberry extract

Overview:

If you are unfamiliar with the French language, blanche means white.

This is another illuminating moisturizer by L’Occitane geared for those who are looking to brighten their skin tone.

Ingredients check:

The meadowsweet flower, also known as “Reine des Prés” (meaning–queen of the meadows), is a pure white flower known for its brightening properties. This is due to its unique creamy white petals that become brighter over time. Meadowsweet naturally contains salicylic acid which acts as a natural exfoliator. It supports the skin’s natural renewal powers and thus, helps anti-aging. Studies have also shown it is a natural anti-inflammatory.[11] This helps alleviate irritation, itchiness, and redness. This is a flower of beauty and its raw luminous properties boost the skin in a similar fashion.

White mulberry extract is also known for its illuminating properties. It contains betulinic acid which slows down the skin’s production of melanin. This helps prevent the skin from becoming discolored and lifeless. Skin tone remains balanced and dark spots are reduced. White mulberry also helps the skin remain firm and elastic. Its nourishing properties keep the skin moist and protected. This slows down the skin’s speed of aging and ensures it remains vibrant and glowing.

What you see, is what you get with this moisturizer. It’s quite an elegant piece. But, how well does it deliver?

Due to this product’s whitening/brightening focus, I was a little concerned that it would be harsh for sensitive skin. But I was pleasantly surprised. This is a moisturizer that is suitable for all skin types.

It has a very balanced texture. It is not super thick, nor is it super lightweight. I thought that it might have an aggressive action on the skin but in fact, it a very nourishing. L’Occitane claims it has a refreshing texture that melts into the skin. Well, based on my experience, I say it’s true. I think it absorbs very nicely indeed. However, there are contrasting user views online. Some reported that it caused pilling–a build-up of residue.

Elegant piece:

Not only will this moisturizer brighten your skin, but the packaging will also brighten up your room. Its white jar and matte silver lid, combined with limited text on the label are very minimal. This simplicity has a hint of class about it. I am a big believer that in certain situations, less is more, and this is a situation where L’Occitane has made it work.

However, on this occasion, less is more (price). This moisturizer comes with a high price tag. It is almost double the price of L’Occitane’s Peony Perfecting Face Cream that made our list.

The good:

  • Clarfies skin and boosts luminosity
  • Lightens skin blemishes
  • Plumping effect

Things to think about:

  • Pilling on the skin doesn’t absorb very quickly

Bottom line:

L’Occitane’s Reine Blanche Brightening Face Cream brightens and whitens the skin, which is particularly helpful for those with dark spots and blemishes.

Unique features:

  • Rich in vitamin C
  • Sun protection
  • Oil-free

The best illuminating moisturizer for:

Those with oily and sun-damaged skin.

Notable ingredients:

Ginkgo biloba leaf extract plus rich in vitamin C

Overview:

When considering skin care, some of us are looking for that wonder cure for our skin. That magic product that transforms everything.

In the midst of all of this, it is easy to overlook that prevention is better than cure. Murad Environmental Shield Essential-C Day Moisture SPF  brings prevention back to the forefront. It does this by protecting the skin from sun damage.

Glowing skin is skin that is full of life and energy. The rate at which skin cells turn over is fast, which leaves a vibrant and bright complexion. Sun damage is responsible for slowing down the rate at which the skin regenerates itself. The result is dull, sluggish, and dry skin with an uneven skin tone. If you prevent sun damage, your skin has a better chance of maintaining its luminous glow.

Ingredients:

Ginkgo biloba is a healing herbal plant with numerous health and skin benefits. For the skin, it contains natural plant flavonoids called quercetin and kaempferol. These antioxidants combat skin-damaging free radicals which reduces inflammation and signs of aging. It can also have a lightning effect. Ginkgo biloba can prevent the development of pigment in the skin by inhibiting the action of an enzyme called tyrosinase. This helps prevent darker skin and age spots from appearing. Therefore, keeping the skin bright and maintaining an even skin tone. It also has a soothing effect that can help assist problem skin types.

Vitamin C is regarded as one of the best anti-aging ingredients around. It is very good at brightening the skin by smoothing the surface and fading areas of pigmentation, such as age spots and sunspots. It can also halt the production of melanin so the skin does not appear discolored and dull. Skin tone is evened out and inflamed redness is reduced, which improves clarity and promotes a dewy complexion.

How does it feel?

This moisturizer comes with a lightweight texture. It is fast-absorbing and non-greasy, which makes it highly suitable for those with oily skin. Conversely, I believe it is not thick enough for those who have dry skin. If you are looking for a more nourishing moisturizer Perricone MD’s Photo-Brightening Moisturizer is a better option for you. Both come with SPF 30 so you’ll be safe in the knowledge that you will not lose out on sun protection.

How does it smell?

It has a light citrus fragrance which is very kind on the nose. This was an unexpected bonus because usually, I do not like the smell of products that have sunscreen in their formula. There is also a lot of positive feedback online related to its smell so do not just take my word for it. However, if you prefer a more aroma of citrus then I’d say the ZELEN Life’s scent is even better. This is to be expected due to the pure, organic ingredients. If citrus is not to your taste and you are looking for a strong floral undertone, you may prefer L’Occitane’s Peony Perfecting Face Cream.

How does it look?

There is not much to rave about regarding this moisturizer’s packaging. It is very basic. However, the price tag is anything but basic. If you are prepared to pay for this premium product, remind yourself that the value is in the cream, and not the white plastic tube. If this is a turn-off, then Perricone MD’s Photo Brightening Moisturizer offers a comparable vitamin C-rich formula at a similar price but comes in a higher quality jar.

On the other hand, if you are looking for an illuminating moisturizer that is a bit softer on your pocket, consider the ZELEN Life Moisturizer or Juice Beauty’s Brightening Essence. These will still make your skin glow while being budget-friendly. However, they do not contain SPF.

The good:

  • Not too oily
  • Chemical-free
  • Citrus scent
  • Has SPF 30

Things to think about:

  • Average packaging
  • High price

Bottom line:

Murad’s Essential-C Day Moisture is an illuminating moisturizer for those looking to repair sun-damaged skin and protect it from further UV radiation.

Unique features:

  • Gives a matte, tinted look
  • Can be used as a BB cream
  • Included sun protection

The best illuminating moisturizer for:

Those with uneven skin tone and looking for a sunscreen. It is suitable for all skin types, particularly mature skin.

Notable ingredients:

Hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, chamomile, galanga root

Overview:

We’ve thought a little outside of the box on this one. The HydroPeptide Solar Defense Tinted is actually a smooth broad-spectrum SPF 30, matte sunscreen. However, its self-adjusting spheres are so moisturizing. Perhaps your skin just needs a helping hand (in this case, helping tint) to support its own natural glow?

Hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, chamomile, and galangal root form the cornerstone of this formula.

Hyaluronic acid is a fantastic moisture retainer. It is a molecule that is naturally present in our skin and bodies that binds water to collagen and essentially locks it in. It can hold a thousand times its weight in water, which not only attracts moisture but also prevents it from escaping the skin and into the air. This binding and sealing of water results make the skin look plumper and dewy.

Aloe vera is also an excellent skin hydrator. As mentioned above, it consists of 98% water and provides the skin with moisture. Whatsmore, it stimulates the production of hyaluronic acid and collagen to make the skin more healthy and radiant looking. Aloe vera is a great cooling and healing agent. Its anti-inflammatory properties help to alleviate and repair problem skin, such as blemishes, sunburn, cuts, and wounds.

Chamomile, also known as matricia flower extract, has antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties.[13] It is considered “a natural healer”, offering calming and soothing benefits that condition the skin, reduce irritation, and repair wounds. When applied to the skin, galanga root can help relieve redness and inflammation. It calms areas of irritation provides the skin with a boost of vitamin C, which has a brightening effect.

I’ve already mentioned the role that free radicals play in damaging our skin and compromising its luminosity. Therefore, if you are craving a glowing complexion then protecting yourself from these unstable molecules is a large part of the battle. Overexposure to the sun’s UVA rays is one of the biggest sources of oxidative stress on the skin and a major catalyst in free radicals taking effect. In turn, oxidative stress leads to photoaging and hyperpigmentation, which imbalances the tone of our skin.

This tinted sunscreen addresses both aspects. It contains UVA, UVB, and infrared protection to prevent the production of free radicals and future damage. While also offering a matte-tinted finish to make prior damage less visible.

Self-adjusting?

HydroPeptide claims that this product contains spheres that adjust to the color of your skin tone. I was a little doubtful that this would actually work, but I was very happy with the results. It provided a well-balanced, radiant tone. I also liked the non-greasy, matte finish that is provided, which is not always the case with sunscreens. It feels like BB cream. If you are unfamiliar with BB creams, they are basically products that can serve as a foundation, moisturizer, and sunscreen all-in-one. You could use this as a lone product or it also works well with a primer and moisturizer.

Despite the pros of this sunscreen, it does have a couple of notable cons. The pump bottle is not the most user-friendly and I experienced a little trouble dispensing the cream. If you prefer a comparable SPF that has more efficient packaging, then Murad’s is probably more suitable for you. However, it does not offer that color-adjusting tint that this one does. Alternatively, Perricone MD’s offers the same level of sun protection and comes in an easy-to-use jar. However, jar-based products are at greater risk of contamination.

Pro tip:

This tinted SPF should be the last step in your morning skincare routine. Remember to apply generously and take advantage of the break-up color adjusting spheres. Start in the center of your face, and move outward until it’s evenly blended.

The good:

  • Evens out uneven skin tone
  • Serves as a primer and moisturizer, and works well with both
  • Gives a tinted, dewy finish
  • SPF 30

Things to think about:

  • Has a strong fragrance
  • The pump doesn’t work well sometimes

Bottom line:

HydroPeptide Solar Defense Tinted is a matte sunscreen that doubles up as a moisturizer and helps even skin tone.

How we chose these products

So how did we choose our top illuminating moisturizers?

The number one thing we looked for was brightness and radiance. Each of the products on this list contains compounds that brighten the skin and give you a glow. We looked for products with natural ingredients that boosted the complexion without using too many harmful chemicals.

Almost all the products on the list have natural or organic ingredients. None have artificial fragrances, colors, and compounds that could potentially have long-term side effects.

We also looked for products that had SPF. Since an illuminating moisturizer can give you shine, we didn’t want you to ruin the effect by having to apply an additional sunscreen. So we looked for products that did have some UV protection. Also, since many folks already have some sun damage, we looked for illuminating moisturizers that would even out the skin tone. Some formulas have a tint, and others have compounds that blend into the skin. Others lighten blemishes or reduce melanin.

Either way, we chose illuminating moisturizers that went beyond simply illuminating and focused on healing your skin. Our goal was to give you healthy skin rather than just be another step before makeup.

Speaking of makeup:

Some of the moisturizers on our list can function as a BB cream and primer. With these illuminating products, you won’t need a bronzer or a highlighter. All you’ll have is a healthy glow.

There’s something for every skin type and skin problem. From fine lines to large pores, sun damage, dryness, atopy, and acne breakouts, we’ve covered the whole gamut of skin conditions that commonly affect people.

If you’re looking for something to tighten the skin or reduce redness, we’ve included products that address those problems. We’ve explained the properties of the primary ingredients that lend these properties to the product. We also provided a variety of textures. Some will give you a matte finish versus a glossy sheen. So the oily and combination skin types can look for a matte finish while the dully, dry skin can go for a full glossy effect.

There’s a product for everyone on this list, depending on what you’re looking for. This is also reflected in the price range. Given that this is a once-daily use product, a little can go a long way, and there’s something to suit every budget.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use an illuminating moisturizer if I have oily skin?

Of course. An illuminating moisturizer can absorb extra oil and moisturize your skin, giving you a healthy glow. People with oily to combination skin can use the products on our list that have a matte finish but still give you a naturally radiant complexion through their lightweight formula.

How do you use illuminating moisturizer?

Various products have different application procedures. You can apply it directly to the skin for a radiant glow. Some might prefer to mix it in with moisturizer or foundation for a subtle glow. Others might use it as a highlighter for certain parts of the face.

What ingredients cause the skin to glow?

Many organic ingredients have a brightening effect. Minerals, algae, iridescent particles, fruits, fruit juice, flower extracts, seeds, essential oils are just some of the many organic products that brighten the skin and give it a radiant boost. Look for the ingredients list as you pick your favorite illuminating moisturizer.

What is an illuminating primer?

An illuminating primer is a primer designed to enhance radiance within the skin, for dull complexions. However, many organic illuminating moisturizers do not require a separate primer. They’re powerful enough on their own to give you a radiant look.

Do you apply an illuminator before or after foundation?

Usually, you will use foundation first and then apply your illuminating moisturizer so that it can blend into your face. However, many illuminating moisturizers have tints or properties that can serve as primers, so you will not require an additional layer of makeup unless you need heavy coverage.

What is the difference between a highlighter and an illuminator?

The difference between a highlighter and an illuminator is that a highlighter concentrates light on a specific area. In comparison, an illuminator casts light more generally. You can use your illuminator moisturizer as a highlighter by using it in strategic areas on your face like the cheekbones and jawline without needing to purchase an additional highlighter.

Is more SPF better?

Generally, the difference between SPF 30 and SP5 50 is minimal. This is why most illuminating moisturizers and sunscreens, in general, have an SPF of 30.

Can I use an illuminating moisturizer if I have acne?

Yes. Remember, the primary role of an illuminating moisturizer is to hydrate and moisturize. Choose an illuminating moisturizer that doesn’t clog your pores and has antibacterial properties to fight acne. Also, select a product that has a lightweight formula that easily absorbs into the skin. There are several on our list good for controlling bacterial growth and prevent acne breakouts.

What to do if I develop a reaction?

If you develop any burning, tingling, or a breakout after applying the product, wash your face immediately. Note the date of manufacture and bring it to the attention of the supplier. Do not apply anything on your face and see a dermatologist if you have continued burning or pigmentation of the skin that lasts 24 hours.
