Quick summary
Before you buy: 6 Things to consider when purchasing clean face washes and cleansers
It’s easy to search for cleansers, read if it’s suitable, and order one online. Once it comes home, you try it, and it is just not right. What went wrong? You didn’t do your homework.
So to help you pick the right face wash and cleanser, here are a few things that you should know.
1. Skin type
It is essential to know your skin type. Do you have normal skin or dry? How about your T-zone? Is it oily, or do you have combination skin? Is your skin sensitive to chemicals or ingredients?
It’s important to understand your skin type, as a cleanser with alcohol can dry your skin, others can exacerbate acne or make your face feel greasy. Knowing your skin type is the first and most crucial step towards picking the right face wash.
2. Cleansers have different textures
Understand that cleansers have different textures. Some are gels, and some are foam. The latter suds up and lathers very quickly, similar to soap. Others don’t and are more watery in consistency. What kind of cleanser are you looking for?
3. Face washes have different actions
While they all cleanse your skin, they have additional actions. Some formulas are created to add moisture to your skin and may not remove deep-seated debris or makeup.
Others have exfoliant properties that remove the dull, dead top skin. Some may reduce the size of your pores or lighten blemishes. What is it that you are looking for in a face wash?
4. Problem areas
To understand what you’re looking for in a face wash, you need first to identify the problem areas of your skin. Do you have excessive sebum production? Are there fine lines, visible pores, or blemishes on your skin? Do you struggle with acne or scars?
These are just some of the problem areas that you face. Hyperpigmentation, melasma, dark spots, and whiteheads are also issues you might encounter. Pick a face wash that addresses your problem areas as well.
5. Read reviews
If your aesthetician or dermatologist recommends a face wash, you might blindly trust it. However, exercise some caution and read the reviews online. Check what other people with similar skin types and skin issues like you have experienced with the product.
Read reviews of people who have purchased the product and posted pictures of their skin. Check for verified reviews for legitimacy.
6. Keep a skin journal
It takes an average of four-to-six weeks for the skin to regenerate and heal. Not all of the epidermal cells are in the same state of growth, and so you may find that some areas of the skin do better than most.
So, journal how your skin reacts and feels for a month with any different product ingredients. This will help you figure out which ingredients benefit your skin the most so you can pick and avoid ingredients in your face wash.
Document any gains and take pictures so you can see any progress being made.

Unique features:
- Gentle yet powerful deep-cleanser
- Vitamin C and antioxidant-rich
- Non-comedogenic and hypoallergenic
The best clean face wash/cleansers for:
All skin types, particularly sensitive and acne-prone skin.
Notable ingredients:
Aloe vera, sunflower, jojoba
Overview:
Chances are if you are looking for a clean face wash, you are looking for a cleanser that is more natural and doesn’t contain a lot of harmful chemicals. ZELEN Life’s Cleanser is exactly that, as it is handmade with purely organic botanicals packed with vitamins, essential fatty acids, and antioxidants that protect the skin.
It is a gentle yet effective daily cleanser suitable for all skin types. Its key ingredients are aloe vera, sunflower, and jojoba.
What do these ingredients do?
Aloe vera helps to rebalance the skin’s pH while reducing scarring. Additionally, it contains antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It increases the amount of collagen in wounds and changes its composition by increasing collagen cross-linking. This promotes wound healing and cell development. [1] Scientific studies have also demonstrated that aloe vera gels can increase flexibility and reduce the fragility of the skin. [2]
Jojoba balances sebum on the skin’s surface while combating the effects of aging, such as fine lines and wrinkles. Studies have shown that the oil from the jojoba plant makes wax esters. This has an anti-inflammatory action, and it can be used to treat skin inflammation, reduce signs of aging, and accelerate wound healing.[3]
Sunflower has a variety of uses, one of which is to retain hydration for a longer amount of time. It absorbs fast and helps to minimize redness while neutralizing free radicals and the damage they can cause.
Various studies have indicated that sunflower seed oil helps maintain the stratum corneum’s integrity. It increases skin moisture in adults’ skin without causing erythema. This is due to the high concentrations of linoleic acid. Linoleic acid enhances keratinocyte proliferation and lipid synthesis, which aids in the healing of the skin’s barrier.[4]
All of ZELEN Life’s Cleanser ingredients work synergistically to eliminate debris, oil, pollutants, and clogged pores, leaving you with clear, pH-balanced skin that stays moisturized throughout the day.
Texture:
The texture of this cleanser is lightweight and non-greasy. It glides easily onto the skin and is almost latherless without sacrificing part of its action. It does not leave the skin dry or irritated, making it a great hypoallergenic option for sensitive skin. It is cruelty-free and doesn’t contain harmful chemicals, such as parabens and sulfates.
Its antibacterial properties make it also suitable for people with acne-prone skin. What’s more, it helps regulate the skin’s natural oil (sebum), and it has a non-comedogenic composition, meaning it does not block pores. Both of which help prevent breakouts.
It leaves a matte finish after each application, and the skin clean and more elastic.
The smell:
The scent of this cleanser is magnificent and comes purely from its natural formulation. It doesn’t include any synthetic fragrances and has a raw aroma that has citrus & floral character. The smell goes away a few seconds after application, and it definitely leaves you wanting more throughout the day. It is suitable even for people who are easily irritated by scents.
The package and bottle design, truly reflect the premium quality and green principles of the brand. It features an airless pump mechanism that not only does it make the application process easy (1-2 pumps) but also protects the cream from environmental contamination.
While this face wash does a fantastic job minimizing acne, if you are looking for something stronger, consider Kate Somerville EradiKate Cleanser. It is a cleanser specifically designed to treat acne breakouts formulated with ingredients such as sulfur, natural oat extract, rice extract, and honey, which are well-known for their strong anti-inflammatory and antibacterial action. Nevertheless, it is important to note that its strong action, could potentially irritate very sensitive skin types.
The good:
- Organic formula is paraben-free, sulfate-free, vegan and cruelty-free
- Regulates sebum production and boosts hydration
- Amazing subtle scent that comes purely from its organic ingredients
- Lightweight formula that provides an all-round protection
Things to think about:
- The organic formula comes with a higher price point
Bottom line:
This is a face wash that is excellent for achieving a clean and clear complexion. It allows you to unclog blocked pores without stripping the necessary moisture and oils that keep your skin refreshed and invigorated.

The best clean face wash/cleansers for:
Those with oily skin or uneven skin tone.
Notable ingredients:
Hydrangea leaf, green tea, rosemary leaf extract, botanical amino acids
Overview:
Boscia is another brand that produces natural and premium skincare products known to benefit the skin in many ways.
Boscia’s Purifying Cleansing Gel is a gentle face wash formulated with hydrangea leaf, green tea, rosemary, willowherb extract, and botanical amino acids.
Let’s dig deeper into its ingredients.
Hydrangea leaf cleans, refines, and decreases the appearance of pores in a gentle way. Hydrangenol in hydrangea leaf extracts showed in numerous studies that it has significant preventive activity against reduced cell viability and degradation of pro-collagen. It also protects against UVB-induced photoaging of the skin.[5]
Green tea is a powerful antioxidant that calms and protects the skin from free radicals. Green tea has been proven to boost collagen and elastin fiber content in several experiments. It also helps to prevent collagen degradation, which has an anti-aging effect.[6] It regulates excess sebum on the skin, making it an excellent ingredient for oily skin types.
Rosemary leaf extract assists in reducing puffiness and swelling. It soothes the skin and treats dermatitis, eczema, and psoriasis due to its rich medicinal qualities.
Willowherb extract possesses antioxidants, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-wrinkle properties, thanks to the flavonoids and ellagitannins it contains.[7]
Botanical Amino Acids cleanse the face of dirt that clog pores and cause breakouts without drying or dehydrating it. They strengthen the skin’s barrier while also maintaining its hydration.
Texture and application:
This cleanser can be used both in the morning and at night. Its texture is lightweight, it produces a great lather, and is not greasy. While it does a great job cleaning the skin and removing makeup, it might feel a bit drying if you don’t have an oily skin type.
If you are looking for a cleanser with a stronger hydrating action, consider ZELEN Life Cleanser or ELEMIS ELEMIS Deep Purifying Daily Wash for Men. They cleanse the skin while maintaining its hydration due to their careful selection of moisturizing natural ingredients. ZELEN Life is formulated with jojoba, aloe vera, and sunflower, while ELEMIS includes oat bark, peppermint, and milk protein, making them great all-rounders.
What about its scent?
The scent of this cleanser is balanced and not by any means overpowering. It has a botanical character that smells nice and fresh, however, some reviewers found it pretty neutral. Nevertheless, it doesn’t contain any synthetic fragrance.
Bottle design:
Lastly, Boscia loves to play with different colors when it comes to its bottle and packaging designs. While the bottle is not exactly premium-looking, we love its minimalist green design and the fact that it comes with a pump, as it makes the application considerably easier and prevents contamination.
The packaging is made with recyclable materials, which shows that the company is environmentally conscious. This is always a plus.
The good:
- Cleans makeup as well
- Hydrating skin deeply while balancing excess oil
- Protects against free radical damage
- Reduces acne
Things to think about:
- Not for combination or dry skin
Bottom line:
This gentle facial cleanser leaves the complexion looking healthy and refined. It is a great option for oily skin.
- Performance
- Ingredients
- Value for money
Unique features:
- Cleans deep-seated dirt
- Dual acts as a toner and cleanser
The best clean face wash/cleansers for:
Those looking for a toner and cleanser in one.
Notable ingredients:
Oat, organic sage leaf, chamomile, rosemary, witch hazel, organic aloe vera
Overview:
Jack Black is a brand that specializes in men’s grooming and skincare. It is very well-known for the quality and effectiveness of its products, both in the US and abroad.
Jack Black Pure Clean Daily Facial Cleanser is a natural two-in-one facial cleanser and toner. It is formulated with ingredients such as oat, organic sage leaf, chamomile, rosemary, witch hazel, and organic aloe vera. It is dermatologist tested, cruelty-free and vegan while also being free from harmful chemicals such as parabens and sulfates.
The main ingredients:
Oat is well-known for its hydrating and moisturizing action. It restores moisture to dry skin and reduces any irritation related to it, such as itchiness, flakiness, redness, etc. It helps achieve optimal pH levels, making the skin appear healthy and young.
Reviews of the scientific literature have shown that chamomile and organic sage leaf extracts are rich in antioxidants, antimicrobial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory compounds.[8, 9] They are very effective in combating conditions such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis.
Rosemary’s bioactive molecules, phytocompounds, possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, antiproliferative, and antitumor activities. As said previously, rosemary reduces swelling, puffiness, and speeds up wound healing due to its medicinal qualities. Additionally, because of its potent antioxidant action, it protects the skin from premature aging and reduces the appearance of wrinkles.
Witch hazel is a very effective ingredient for acne treatment. It eliminates excess oil and dries up pimples due to its astringent properties. Furthermore, it soothes the skin from irritations and treats sunburns.
Lastly, aloe vera is an ingredient that literally does everything. It acts as a moisturizer, fights sunburns, aging, acne, and soothes the skin.
Texture and application:
Jack Black’s Pure Clean Daily Facial Cleanser has a liquid cream texture that is lightweight, non-sticky, and doesn’t leave any greasy residue. We didn’t find it to be as dehydrating to the skin as Boscia Purifying Cleansing Gel, however, some reviewers did mention that it made their skin dry. Nevertheless, we found it very gentle in its cleaning action and refreshing.
As for the scent, it does have a fresh herbal scent that is pleasant and does not smell perfumy. It is very mild as it comes purely from its botanical ingredients (this means no artificial fragrance is present in its formulation) and reminds a blend of sage, rosemary, and lavender. It is very calming and goes away after a few seconds of application.
What makes this cleanser a bargain is how big the bottle size is for the price. While the bottle could have looked a bit more luxurious – if you take into account that Jack Black is a premium brand – its size surely makes up for it. At the same price, you get almost more than 3x product (473ml) in relation to other brands on our list, such as Kate Somerville, ELEMIS, etc.
The good:
- Cleanse dead skin cells, and dirt effectively
- Great value for money – large bottle size
- Does not contain harsh chemicals
Things to think about:
- Can dry out the skin if overapply
Bottom line:
This is a good astringent clean cleanser that has a great price and works as a toner as well.
- Performance
- Ingredients
- Value for money
Unique features:
- Alternative to salicylic acid
- Reduces pores size
- Unclogs pores by removing impurities
- Soothes and nourishes acne-prone skin
The best clean face wash/cleansers for:
Those with visibly large pores and acne-prone skin.
Notable ingredients:
Sulfur, oat extract, botanical complex with honey & rice bran extracts
Overview:
Kate Sommerville’s EradiKate Daily Foaming Cleanser is formulated to cleanse acne breakouts while unclogging pores, balancing oil, and preventing future blemishes. Its strong acne action is evident just by looking at its formulation, as it contains 3% sulfur, oat extract, and a botanical complex with honey & rice bran extracts.
Sulfur combats breakouts and reduces irritations while also preventing new blemishes from occurring. This is because of its strong antibacterial properties.
But there’s more.
It also reduces the appearance of pores and the amount of sebum on the skin and exfoliates dead skin cells.
Kate Sommerville also includes a mixture of natural ingredients such as honey and rice bran extracts. Honey minimizes the pathogenicity of skin-relevant microbes and modulates cytokine production. It is also found to have a potent anti-inflammatory action.
Honey promotes re-epithelialization and angiogenesis of wounds.[11] It calms and soothes the skin, speeds up wound healing, and acts as a natural exfoliator removing dead skin cells and dirt that clog the pores and elevate acne.
This cleanser also has natural oat extract that balances out sebum production. Additionally, it moisturizes the skin, creating a barrier on its surface, keeping the hydration locked in.
This face wash is balanced in thickness and can feel a bit greasy if you put too much. Due to the inclusion of sulfur, it can cause excess dehydration and irritation if you have a very sensitive dry skin type.
Because of that, it is best to apply once per day when you first start instead of two or three in order to let your skin get used to its strong action.
Nevertheless, it does a fantastic job of removing blemishes and pimples caused by acne.
If you are looking for something more appropriate for sensitive skin types, consider the ZELEN Life Cleanser or ELEMIS Deep Purifying Daily Wash on our list. Both take a more gentle approach by including a lot of more natural ingredients that are known to combat acne, such as aloe, sunflower, jojoba and peppermint, oat bark, and spearmint. However, they don’t provide as strong action as Kate Sommerville’s EradiKate Daily Foaming Cleanser.
What about the scent?
This cleanser has a strong sulfur smell, even though it also has a synthetic fragrance added to its formulation. If you are easily irritated by strong perfumes, then this might not be for you. If that is the case, consider ZELEN Life’s, Jack Black’s, or Boscia’s Cleansers, which don’t include any artificial fragrance and have a lighter smell.
But there are some more things to consider.
If you wear makeup, consider Caudalie Vinopure Cleanser in our list, as this cleanser doesn’t have a strong makeup removal action. Caudalie Vinopure Cleanser contains natural salicylic acid, which also reduces acne breakouts by controlling oil production.
Overall, this is a cleanser that provides a very strong action against acne. Whether you are suffering from pimples, blemishes, blackheads, or whiteheads, Kate Sommerville has you covered. However, due to its clinical strength formulation, its price tag is a bit high but definitely worth it.
The good:
- Prevents future breakouts
- Clears acne and acne scars
- Reduces milia and whiteheads
- Balances oily skin
Things to think about:
- Doesn’t remove makeup
- Strong scent
- Not suitable for dry and sensitive skin
Bottom line:
This is a superior face wash for those trying to reduce large pores, whiteheads, and acne.
- Performance
- Ingredients
- Value for money
Unique features:
- Exfoliating properties
- Prevents premature aging
The best clean face wash/cleansers for:
Men with dry skin types that need a hydration boost
Notable ingredients:
Oak bark, spearmint, peppermint, milk protein, glycerin
Overview:
ELEMIS’ Deep Purifying Daily Wash for Men is a cleanser in the form of a lightweight gel, which has as main ingredients a blend of oak bark, spearmint, and peppermint.
Studies have shown that oak bark formulation minimizes methicillin-resistant S aureus contamination and promotes healing. When used topically, oak bark has been proven to reduce inflammations, itchy skin, and other types of irritations. [12]
Tests indicated that peppermint demonstrates considerable antibacterial, antiviral, and antitumor abilities. It is also antioxidant-rich and provides some antiallergenic capabilities.[13] Its potent antibacterial properties purify the skin, unclog the pores, and assist combat acne.
Additionally, as peppermint contains menthol, it offers a cool sensation after each application, which not only does it soothe the skin but also reduces puffiness, heals rosacea, and balances oil.
Spearmint has similar qualities to peppermint. It is antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, and antioxidant-rich, assisting in wound healing, reducing acne and the appearance of wrinkles.
Lastly, milk protein and glycerin hydrate the skin and lock in moisture. They nourish and revitalize the skin, boosting its health and youthful appearance.
All of its ingredients together provide great cleansing action, removing impurities and dirt while also leaving the skin refreshed and hydrated.
Application and texture:
It is recommended to use in the morning. It softens facial hair making the shaving process more gentle and easy.
While it is not the most lightweight cleanser on our list, applying it to your skin doesn’t feel thick. We didn’t find it to leave any greasy residue behind, but it might feel oily if you apply a large amount or have oily skin. Just a dime-size amount is enough to provide you with all of its benefits.
You definitely feel your skin hydrated and nourished after application, making it great for dry skin types. If you have oily skin, consider Caudalie Vinopure Cleanser or Boscia Cleansing Gel which provides a better oil balancing effect. This is because of the greater number of oil-controlling ingredients they contain, such as hydrangea leaf, green tea, rosemary leaf extract, natural salicylic acid, and organic grape.
As for its scent, it is pleasant and has a masculine character. It is not heavy nor light and goes away after a few minutes. However, it does contain fragrance, so bear in mind that.
The tube design is functional, however, the cap, if not closed all the way, doesn’t prevent the gel from leaking. We found the cap to open very easily, which resulted in accidental spills several times. However, this might have been a defect only with our unit.
Concluding, the black color of the tube definitely gives a premium look, but its construction could have been a bit more sturdy.
The good:
- A little goes a long way
- Good for sensitive dry skin
- Reduces fine lines
Things to think about:
- Cannot stand the product on a countertop as designed, as the product leaks out
- Can make your skin feel oily if overapplied
Bottom line:
This is an excellent clean face wash for men looking to reduce dry skin conditions.
- Performance
- Ingredients
- Value for money
Unique features:
- Purifies and tightens pores
- Reduces blemishes
- Reduces excessive sebum production
The best clean face wash/cleansers for:
People looking to control excess oil and wear makeup a lot
Notable ingredients:
Natural salicylic acid, organic grape, organic essential oils
Overview:
Caudalie’s Vinopure Natural Pore Purifying Gel Cleanser is the perfect cleanser if you suffer from excess oil or apply makeup regularly. It contains natural salicylic acid, organic grape water, and organic essential oils, all of which have many benefits.
The salicylic acid makes it a ‘pore-diminishing’ cleanser. It reduces the appearance of large pores while balancing out the skin’s oil. This results in the minimization of acne breakouts and blackheads. Additionally, it helps unclog the pores, tightening their appearance.
Salicylic acid exfoliates the skin’s outer layer (stratum corneum) and has comedolytic properties making it a great peeling agent for acne sufferers.[14]
Its formulation also includes grape seed extracts. The topical use of grape seed heals skin wounds due to the release of endothelial growth factors. Additionally, it possesses antioxidant and antibacterial properties.[15]
Grapes are also rich in vitamin E. It is an essential vitamin for the skin as it offers many benefits some of which are:
- It protects from environmental aggressors such as UV radiation
- It moisturizes the skin, making it softer and more elastic
- It reduces swelling, redness, and other inflammatory conditions such as acne
Adding to the above, this cleanser also contains a blend of organic ingredients such as rosemary, peppermint, lavender, etc. However, their benefits were discussed previously, so we are not going to mention them again here.
The cleanser is very light in terms of consistency and spreads easily across the skin. It doesn’t feel sticky or leave any greasy residue and does a fantastic job removing any traces of makeup you might have, dead skin cells, or dirt
But there’s more.
It does all that without stripping the hydration away due to its lightweight nature and its inclusion of grape juice, making it suitable even for combination and dry skin types. Instantly after application, you will feel your skin clean, refreshed, and healthier.
Nevertheless, one thing to bear in mind is that it doesn’t produce a lot of lather, such as Boscia’s Purifying Cleansing Gel.
The scent:
The scent of this cleanser is gorgeous, balanced, and comes purely from its organic formulation, similar to the previously reviewed ZELEN Life Cleanser. You can really distinguish the notes of its ingredients, such as the grape, the peppermint, and the florals (lavender, rosemary).
One last thing.
The packaging of this cleanser is simple but looks great. Definitely, for its price tag, more could have been done to make it more appealing, but we didn’t experience any functional issues with it i.e. leaking, etc., so we can’t complain much.
The good:
- Leaves your face feeling smooth and clean
- Gorgeous natural scent from its botanical ingredients
- Removes makeup effectively
- Doesn’t dry out the skin
Things to think about:
- A lot of botanical ingredients in its formulation. Make sure you don’t have any allergies to any of them.
Bottom line:
This is an excellent face wash makeup removal that is suitable for all skin types.
- Performance
- Ingredients
- Value for money

Frequently asked questions
What is a face wash?
The job of any face wash is to clean your face and get rid of all the dirt, impurities, grime, and pollutants. It simply cleans your face and unclogs your pores of sebum and bacteria.
How is face wash different from a cleanser?
Face washes and cleansers perform the same action. Their job is the same; to clean your face. However, a face wash can be foaming or non-foaming. That means it can lather up or not.
However, a cleanser is different in that it does not foam or lather up. It is more oil-based and tends to dissolve grime and makeup from your skin.
What is the difference between a gel face wash and a foam face wash?
Foam-based face washes are more like soap and tend to clean by forming a lather. A gel-based face wash is more of a hydrating face wash and manages to add moisture to your skin. The oil-based gel tends to remove oil and oil-based impurities.
How do I choose the face wash based on my skin type?
Different face washes are created for different skin types. For example, face washes that have salicylic acid are suitable for oily in combination skin. At the same time, they may not be suitable for dry skin or sensitive skin.
Face washes that contain alcohol or mattify the skin are also not suitable for dry skin. In the same way, clean face washes with essential oils might not be the best choice for people with oily skin.
What should I look for in a face wash?
When you look for a face wash, first review your problem areas. Find the face wash that addresses your existing problems. There are several formulas on our list that are targeted at blemishes, photoaging, fine lines, ingrown hairs, acne, scars, and other skin problems.
Review your skin journal and skin problems and then pick a face wash suitable for your skin type and areas of concern.
How often should I wash my face every day?
How often you wash your face depends on your skin type and the conditions of your day. It is recommended to wash your face in the morning and at night.
However, if you have dry skin, you might want to be careful of your regimen. Washing your face too often can strip away the skins’ natural moisture.
For those with oily and combination skin, you may want to consider washing your face more than twice a day. If you are somebody who spends all day out in the sun, then you might need to use a face wash during the middle of the day.
If you are somebody who stays indoors with an air-conditioner, you might not need to use a face wash as often.
Will I need a moisturizer or cream after a face wash?
Dermatologists recommend that you wash, tone, and then moisturize. Irrespective of your skin type, it’s always necessary to moisturize after washing your face. This will add and lock in any moisture within your skin cells.
Are there any side effects to do using an exfoliating face wash?
An exfoliating face wash tends to strip away the upper layers of the epidermis. This can be harmful if done daily. Unless you have very oily skin, it is advised that you exfoliate once a week.
Choosing an exfoliating face wash can be detrimental for those with dry skin—exercise caution. If your skin feels too tight and peels, then moisturize and only use it a week later.
What are the signs of a reaction to a face wash?
If you develop any signs of redness, itching, swelling, pain, numbness, tingling, or weals, it would be wise to wash away the product. Use ice to reduce inflammation. If the reaction doesn’t subside in 2 hours, it would be best to see a dermatologist.
Conclusion
The best clean face wash is out there for you. Irrespective of your skin type and skin problem, there must be something on this list that suits you.
Do you have a favorite face wash that keeps your skin squeaky clean?
If yes, share the name of your formula with us, and we might consider adding it to our list!
